Secondary School Videoconference between Prague and Chicago
Czech students participating in videoconference
May 4, 2009
In support of the Deliberation in a Democracy program (DID), the American Center of the U.S. Embassy in Prague hosted a videoconference between approximately 40 Czech and Chicago secondary school students on April 16, 2009. DID is a collaboration between two NGOs, Partners Czech and the Chicago-based Constitutional Rights Foundation.
This exchange program brings together Czech and American high school students to enhance the students’ knowledge of contemporary social issues and to deepen students’ involvement in discussions on principles of democracy in their countries. Teachers and students from the Czech Republic and Chicago participate in exchanges. Twice a year, a digital videoconference is moderated by the students.
On April 16th, students discussed “Crime and Punishment – Should Democratic Countries Ban the Death Penalty?,” which included an examination of each country's legislation as well as a discussion of human rights and ethics.
