United States Modifies the List of EU Products Subject to Additional Duties

February 13, 2009

On January 14, 2009, the United States announced it is modifying the list of products on which it charges duty in connection with the European Union’s ban on beef and beef products from animals given any of six specific growth-promoting hormones.

In 1996, the World Trade Organization (WTO) concluded there was no cause for the EU’s ban, yet the EU has refused to allow the import of the U.S. beef in question.

The U.S. government hopes that modifying the list will promote a WTO-consistent resolution to the dispute.
