U.S. Energy Envoy Gray Talks in Prague about Gas Supplies from Caspian Region

November 21, 2008

U.S.  Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy Boyden Gray visited Prague on November 10.  The topic of the trip: Energy security for the United States and Europe, which Amb. Gray discussed with Industry and Trade Ministry representatives, academics and the media. “The U.S. wants to help European countries diversify their energy sources to decrease the chance of Russia’s using its energy supplies as a diplomatic weapon against them,” said Gray. He noted countries like Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan want to diversify their customer base and thus will do their best to broaden business outside the Russian sphere of influence.  Gray also opined that the current global financial crisis was the decisive element in the U.S. elections that tipped the scale toward Barack Obama.
