November 9 — U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense Alexander Vershbow headed a U.S. delegation to Prague for a “High-Level Defense Group” meeting with Czech Defense Ministry officials on November 6. Vershbow and Deputy of Czech Defense Minister Jan Fulik signed an agreement to exchange engineers and scientists that will further enhance already strong bilateral defense cooperation between the Czech Republic and the United States. The delegations discussed NATO’s strategic concept; development of the new missile-defense system’s configuration; cooperation in Afghanistan; and the purchase of military equipment.

At a press conference with Deputy Minister Fulik, Vershbow noted, “We look to the Czech Republic to be a key partner as we work with our NATO allies to move forward with the new missile defense system as a means to better protect NATO territory and NATO populations.” Fulik added, “We are convinced there are several areas open for possible Czech participation [in missile defense]. Fulik mentioned Czech benefiting from information gained from U.S. sensors and the planned dispatch of a Czech expert to the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
