The United States and the Czech Republic agreed to work toward a joint declaration on civil nuclear cooperation that will further promote commercial cooperation in the sector and encourage scientific and research cooperation, including training and human resource development. Under Secretary of Commerce Francisco Sánchez and Czech Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Milan Hovorka agreed to continue efforts to finalize the joint declaration in the coming months.
Under Secretary Sánchez led a 10-company civil nuclear trade policy mission to the Czech Republic to demonstrate U.S. technologies, services and experiences and promote U.S. industry’s role in the Czech civil nuclear sector. Participating U.S. companies sought to increase their understanding of the Czech nuclear industry’s capabilities and identify areas where they could partner with the Czech Republic to further develop its nuclear industry.
Under Secretary Sanchez considered the trip an opportunity to enhance the bilateral relationship with the Czech government. “The United States enjoys a strong relationship with the Czech Republic based on solid economic and commercial ties,” Sánchez said. “We expect this new economic and commercial dialogue to build on these strong foundations, and allow us to address topics that interest both sides, including market access, innovation, business development and trade promotion.”
“The Czech Republic and the United States have a long history of partnership, which has never been stronger that it is today. But we both would like to see more. The potential to take it to a new level by intensifying our economic and commercial dialogue is there. We stand ready to develop the creativity and energy necessary to move our trade and economic agenda forward,” Deputy Minister Hovorka said.
While in Prague, Sánchez attended briefings with the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s energy department, the State Office for Nuclear Safety and the Radioactive Waste Repository Authority. Sánchez participated in a luncheon roundtable with representatives from the business, research, and academic communities and toured the Řež Nuclear Research Institute. Sánchez and the mission delegation visited the Temelin Nuclear Power Plant to close the Prague visit.
