„Totalitarian Circus“ Opens in Prague

Outdoor exhibition "The Calendarium of Totality" on Náměstí Republiky in Prague

April 29, 2009

“The Calendarium of Totality,” a traveling outdoor exhibition supported by the U.S. Embassy, was launched on Náměstí Republiky in Prague last Thursday. The 30m long installation, shaped as a communist era bus stop, details significant events in Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and East Germany during the Communist period.

The Calendarium is part of a larger project commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. The project explains the grim and sometimes grotesque circumstances of living in a communist country to the younger generation.

Part of the project includes a theater performance entitled “Osobní anamnéza” at the Roxy Theatre in Prague as well as a book entitled “Věčné časy”, which includes contributions by Václav Havel and Karel Hvížďala and is published by the weekly magazine Respekt.

The Calendarium will be on display in Prague until May 3, travelling next to Plsen in late May and on to other cities in the Czech Republic and Europe later in the year.
