Young Writers at the U.S. Embassy Residence

June 25, 2009

On June 19, Chargé d’Affaires Mary Thompson-Jones hosted the Awards Ceremony of the annual English Language Essay Competition organized by the Society of Friends of the USA (SPUSA) at the U.S. Embassy residence. The traditional literary contest was open to student-writers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This year’s theme was "The Lessons You've Taught Me".

All essays were judged by an independent jury chaired by noted Czech writer Mr. Jiří Stránský, the former President of the Czech PEN Club, who has been involved in this key role since the competition’s inception in 1992, and who was actually presenting the awards together with actor Martin Dejdar. Among the guests of this ceremony we could welcome also Australian writer Isobelle Carmody, writer Otto Ulč, translator and professor Miroslav Jindra and writer Jan Vodňanský.
