Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings

June 6, 2009

US Embassy Cultural Attaché David Gainer participated in the expert conference in Pilsen dealing with reducing Prostitution and Sexual Exploitation. The speakers agreed that economic and political instability in certain countries, lack of awareness among public and victims, negligence of human rights violation, gender and racial discrimination and high demand for sexual services and cheap labor are main causes of sexual exploitation.

Czech Republic is a transit country for trafficking in human beings, and also a source country and a destination country. Forced labor by foreigners was pointed by the Ministry of Interior official as a relatively new issue in the Czech Republic. The U.S. government supports programs that deal with prevention, education and support and protection of victims. Several experts from the Czech Republic had an opportunity to travel to the United States and learn how to deal with such serious problems as participants of the International Visitor Leadership Program.
