The United States on the Road to the Climate Change Agreement
September 18, 2009
International climate negotiations are reaching a crucial point. The international community must come to key decisions concerning climate policy in Copenhagen in December 2009. The fast growth of greenhouse gas emissions must be cut off within the next 10 years and must immediately turn into a sharp decline in order to combat climate change. That will only happen if the international community agrees on ambitious reduction targets. Long-term commitments are required and the Copenhagen deal has to go beyond 2020.
The U.S. Embassy is a partner of an international conference “On the Road to Copenhagen: The EU and the US – Driving Forces for a Successful Post 2012 Agreement?” that will take place in Prague on September 23. The conference, organized by the Czech Ministry of Environment and the Heinrich Boell Stiftung, primarily aims to discuss the challenges the U.S. and the EU are facing in taking up a "pioneer" role in the international climate negotiations.
