U.S. Elections 2008: New Hampshire Victory for Hillary Clinton and John McCain

January 9, 2008

Hillary Rodham Clinton won New Hampshire's Democratic primary Tuesday night. Clinton took 39.3% of the vote ahead of her nearest rival Democrat Barack Obama, who got 36%. John Edwards, the 2004 vice presidential candidate, finished with 17 percent.

John McCain gained 37 percent in the Republican race and pushed Mitt Romney with 31.7% to second place. Mike Huckabee, who won the Iowa caucuses, finished third in New Hampshire with 11 percent.

The New Hampshire primary is often seen as a crucial test for candidates in their contention for the U.S. presidential nomination.

Presidential candidates for the November 2008 polls may be selected by February 5, when over 20 states will hold primary elections.
