NIE (National Intelligence Estimate) Report on Iranian Nuclear Program

4. December 2007

The United States released the unclassified key judgments from the U.S. intelligence community's latest estimate of Iran's nuclear weapons efforts and its uranium enrichment program. The estimate offers grounds for hope that intensified diplomatic efforts could prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.  Briefing reporters December 3, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley underscored that for these efforts to succeed, the international community has to turn up the pressure on Iran -- with diplomatic isolation, United Nations sanctions, and with other financial pressure.  And Iran has to decide that it wants to negotiate a solution. The intelligence report also concluded the risk of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon remains a very serious problem.
