64th Anniversary of the Liberation of West Bohemia by U.S. Armed Forces

64th Anniversary of the Liberation of West Bohemia by U.S. Armed Forces

The U.S. Embassy welcomes interest in the annual World War II liberation celebrations throughout the Czech Republic. The World War II commemoration celebrations usually take place each year between mid-April and mid-May although there are some events at other times of the year.

Among the events are celebrations for the liberation of towns by U.S. and other Allied forces, remembrances for prisoners of war and for personnel of U.S. military aircraft shot down over Czechoslovakia during World War II, as well as an annual “Convoy of Liberty” parade of historic military vehicles.

The U.S Embassy relies primarily on volunteers from its embassy staff to support these events.  It is always a great privilege to see that the Czech Republic continues to honor U.S. servicemen and all those who struggled in the defense of a free Europe during World War II.  Visiting U.S. World War II veterans and their descendants, active duty U.S. servicemen and women, and the general public are welcome to check the commemoration events calendar and attend.

If your city or town would like U.S. Embassy representation at your liberation event please contact the US Embassy Public Affairs office at:

The Prague US Embassy receives many requests to be involved in liberation events and as much as we would like to participate in them all we sometimes are not able. The earlier we receive the date and details of your event the more likely we are able to provide embassy participation. Thank you.

The U.S. embassy in Prague is also looking for stories of the original events by those who remember them, as well as copies of photos of the events. Please contact the Public Affairs Section of U.S. Embassy Prague if you would like to provide information for this effort to capture the legacy of freedom, sacrifice and friendship between Czechs and Americans during World War II.
