Lecture by U.S. Architect Charles Durrett: "Cohousing a Senior Cohousing"

When:  Thursday, July 24, 2008
Where: American Center

Charles Durrett can truly be cosidered the pioneer of cohousing in the U.S. Cohousing is a concept that originated in Denmark. It can be described as a way of neighborhood community cooperation with an emphasis on deeper interpersonal relations. In reality it means that residents live in their own apartments but share certain areas such as washing room, library or gymnasium. This can bring about considerable economical, ecological and social benefits.

Senior cohousing works the same way except the inhabitants are mid age or elderly people. It represents a unique and sustainable opportunity to be prepared for old age in a circle of friends in a well-known environment.

However this idea is relatively new in the Czech Republic, the aging European population makes it a very timely and important topic.
