“History and Archaeology in the American South”

Lecture by Dr. Nicholas Honerkamp, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

When: Thursday, March 12, 2009, at 5:30 p.m.
Where: American Center, Tržiště 13, Praha 1 (only 50 m below U.S. Embassy)

This general-audience level overview of the history and archaeology of a significant site near Savannah, Georgia, will concentrate on the claim by Eli Whitney that he invented the cotton gin there in 1792.

Some historians believe that this invention contributed to the efficiency of the slavery system in the American South and thus indirectly contributed to the American Civil War. The pros and cons of Whitney’s claim, and the impact of the cotton gin as a factor in the Civil War will be highlighted in this presentation.

Dr. Nicholas Honerkamp, an important archaeologist in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Geography at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, is visiting the Czech Republic for a string of lectures, to share his expertise in the field of archaeological research in the American Southeast.

The lecture will be held in English, admission is free of charge.
