U.S. Chargé d‘Affaires Mary Thompson-Jones and Ambassador of Canada Valerie Raymond and welcomed over 50 European, 20 U.S. and five Canadian experts at the 31st American Indian Workshop on March 25, 2010 at the American Center. The American Indian Workshop (AIW) is the most important scholarly platform for European researchers into issues related to the native peoples of North America. This year academics focused on “Transformation, Translation, Transgression: Native American Culture in Contact and Context”.
The key-note speaker Jan F. Ullrich, whose attendance at the workshop was supported by a US Embassy grant, represents the Lakota Language Consortium, Bloomington, Indiana, USA. He is considered one of the most accomplished applied linguists working with Lakota today. Jan Ullrich’s particularly focused on language revitalization, its best ways and facilitation.
Jan Ullrich has been undertaking linguistic fieldwork on the Indian Reservations of South Dakota since 1992. He has amassed one of the largest collections of Lakota texts in the world and has published numerous books and articles on Lakota language and mythology. Mr. Ullrich received his MS in Education and Linguistics from the University of Ostrava. His particular areas of specialization are Siouan linguistics, language pedagogy, and language revitalization.
The goal of the American Indian Workshop is to provide a platform for established academics and young scholars to share their expertise and experiences as well as to benefit from one another's critical engagement. The meetings, hosted each year by a different European scholarly institution, are now regarded as the most important in Native American Studies worldwide. This year's American Indian Workshop was hosted by the Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures and The National Museum - Náprstek Museum.
