Smithsonian Expert Lectured in the Czech Republic

December 8, 2009 — James Deutsch, author and curator of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., lectured at universities in Prague, Brno and Olomouc in November. His presentations covered various topics including NASA and its successes and failures during its long history, and the current media situation  in the U.S. 

He also participated in a symposium on African American studies at Palacky University in Olomouc where he lectured on John Jasper, a famous African American preacher of the late 19th century. He also visited the National Technical Museum in Prague, the Moravian Gallery and the Museum of Romani Culture in Brno where he exchanged expertise with his Czech colleagues and discussed potential areas for future co-operation between museums.

James Deutsch is a writer, editor, and curator at two units of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.: the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He also serves as an adjunct professor in the American Studies Department at George Washington University.
