December 22 — A panel discussion addressing tolerance toward different religions and their symbols attracted a full house at INFO USA, Brno on December 15. The panel, organized by the U.S. Embassy and the Libertas Independent Agency, featured Senator Jaromír Štětina, Prague Imam Emir Omič, Christian Democrat Deputy Chairperson David Macek, and Petr Klásek, a leader of the Czech Buddhist community. MF Dnes reporter Martin Komárek moderated the discussion.
All panelists agreed that interfaith dialogue is something the Czech Republic lacks on all societal levels. “Official declarations are not enough,” said Klásek. Imam Omič faulted the media for the unsatisfactory situation, saying, “Emphasizing the differences between religions and broadcasting only those news items that sell well distorts reality.” Added Klásek, “People love to identify an enemy they can blame for their own failings. This, however, strengthens the spiral of hate that has always led to doom.”
The evening’s most controversial topic was the proposed construction of another mosque in Brno. In particular, the prospect of a minaret elicited a heated debate.
