The Bureau of Consular Affairs of the Department of State offers a toll-free information line that provides information regarding the safety of traveling overseas. The number is 1-888-407-4747. From overseas (a toll call), the number is 317-472-2328. Operators are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday, and are easily accessible. During times of crisis, operators are available 24 hours a day. For detailed information about traveling abroad, you may also view each country's Consular Information Sheet at travel.state.gov

Consular officers cannot act as travel agents, banks, lawyers, investigators, or law enforcement officers. They may not find employment, obtain residence or driving permits, act as interpreters, search for missing luggage, or settle disputes with hotel managers. They can, however, tell you how to get help on these and other matters.
