Live Debate: Digital Politics and US Elections

When: May 15, 2008, 7:30 p.m.

A series of discussions on the 2008 US elections will be hosted by US embassy London in partnership with the Financial Times and YouGovStone. The inaugural event, "Digital Politics – Effects of the Information Age on the 2008 U.S. Election and Beyond" which takes place on Thursday May 15 between 7.30 and 9.00 pm, will be chaired by Gideon Rachman, the Financial Times’ chief foreign affairs columnist. Watch the discussion live online at www.ft.com/usdiscussion and submit a question for the expert panel via the online submissions form. Czech-Slovak USA Queen Tours the U.S. Embassy

May 13, 2008

Ms. Michelle Wiedel, the reigning Czech-Slovak USA Queen, visited the Czech Republic, the land of her ancestors, on Tuesday, May 13. During her visit she toured the U.S. Embassy Prague with public affairs officer Alex McKnight, who introduced Ms. Wiedel to Embassy activities.  Ms. Wiedel also hiked up to the Glorietta accompanied by one of the Embassy’s Marine Security Guards to enjoy the beautiful weather and outstanding view of Prague. Ms. Wiedel finished her visit with a tour through the American Center, where the director reviewed the Center’s programs and services. (more)

Eve of Cuba Solidarity Day: Screening of  "Damas de Blanco"  and Discussion at the American Center

The city of Pilsen once again pulled out all the stops for its annual May 6 celebration of its liberation by General Patton’s troops at the end of World War II.  Ambassador and Mrs. Graber attended a wreath laying ceremony at City Hall and hosted a lunch for U.S. and Belgian veterans at the new Marriott hotel.  After lunch, the Ambassador visited an exhibition opening which demonstrated artistic ties between the University of Western Bohemia and Miami University of Ohio. (more)

There are only a handful of Czech reporters who had the opportunity to visit the Marshall Islands, the American base on the Kwajalein Atoll, and to bring back unique reports and photographs. It is right there, in faraway Micronesia, where on a small piece of land surrounded by the ocean you can find a radar which may fulfill a new mission in the Czech Republic in the future. (more)

May 5, 2008

The U.S. Embassy in Prague welcomed a convoy of U.S. Army World War II vehicles on Friday, May 2. Czech, American and Belgian veterans gather each year at the beginning of May to commemorate the liberation of Czechoslovakia by General Patton’s army 63 years ago. They began the convoy at the U.S. Embassy as a way of thanking America. The vehicles then travel throughout Bohemia, visiting towns that have their own liberation ceremonies. (more)

The American Center hosted a mock debate on U.S. presidential elections on Tuesday, April 29. The event aimed to simulate a real U.S. Presidential election debate, enabling the public to gain insight into the process while providing talented university students with an opportunity to demonstrate their debating skills and political knowledge.  Four selected university students were prepared by the Association of International Affairs to play the role of contenders to the office of U.S. President. (more)

On April 21-23, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett led a business delegation to Prague (coincidentally, Milwaukee is Ambassador Graber's hometown). The Embassy’s Commercial Section organized a Country Briefing led by Ambassador Graber and Commercial Counselor Greg O'Connor; a series of appointments for Wisconsin Secretary of Commerce Jack Fischer with the Ministry of Industry Trade and the Confederation of Industry. In a continuation of the Embassy’s successful cooperation with Rotary Club Czech Republic, we welcomed on April 24 our fourth group of Junior Ambassadors. These high school students are nominated by their local Rotary Club chapters on the basis of their academic achievements, extra-curricular activities and community involvement. (more)
