Over sixty university teachers and professionals from the field of American Studies from all over the Czech Republic met at the American Studies Seminar on May 11-12. The event was co-organized by the J.W. Fulbright Commission and the U.S. Embassy, and it was held in representational halls of the Ministry of Culture and at the American Center.
Its keynote speaker - James Pontuso, Professor of Political Science from Hampden-Sydney College - captivated the audience with his presentation on “The Benefits and Drawbacks of American Idealism,” outlining issues which were discussed during the later panels. The choice of participants was not random – most of the panelists and participants took part in one of the scholarship programs administered by the Fulbright Commission.
The professionals present compared Czech and American perspectives on a variety of themes from the field of American Studies, such as transatlantic relations, media, literature, religious pluralism. American Studies as an academic discipline was also discussed. Lively and inspiring discussions marked the two-day program, which the participants found extremely useful and worth repeating in the future.
