American Empire?

Lecture by Professor Bradley A. Thayer, Department of Political Science, Baylor University

When: Tuesday, December 1, at 6 pm
Where: Tržiště 13, Prague 1 – Malá Strana

Is America an empire? Bradley Thayer will explore the details of that question. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States emerged as the lone, unrivaled superpower on the global stage. America's military, diplomatic and economic--not to mention its cultural and ideological--presence is felt throughout the world.

President Barack Obama’s administration has pledged to maintain and advance U.S. primacy in the world. But, what exactly are the benefits of American hegemony for the U.S. and the world and do they outweigh the costs and drawbacks of this fledgling empire?

Professor Thayer anticipates a lively discussion on the topic, welcomes alternative viewpoints and will address the opinions that dissenters present with his own counter-arguments.

The discussion will be held in English.

Professor  Bradley A. Thayer will also deliver his speech at the conference entitled United States of America – Jeffersonian Roots, Ideas, Policy. Continuity or Change? on November 30,2009 in Brno and presents his lecture at Hradec Kralove University on December 1, 2009.
