July 10, 2008

The American Center will host a series of attractive events and programs throughout the summer, including political lectures, a photo exhibition and a photo competition, and a thematic evening about Hawaii – a first one in an upcoming series on American states.

In July, we so far organized two policy lectures that outlined potential scenarios in U.S. foreign policy after the 2008 presidential election. On July 1st, Heritage Foundation Vice-President Kim Holmes discussed the American role in the 21st century world with a reference to his recently released book on the topic. A week after that, on July 7th, the American Center introduced Boston University professor Igor Lukeš. Mr. Lukeš spoke in detail about the presidential candidates and their respective approaches to various issues before party conventions. The lecture took place at the Institute of International Relations.

Until the end of August, we also continue to display the exhibition “Kwajalein – Life with the Radar”.  Original NHL jerseys and other hockey memorabilia will also be displayed at the American Center library to mark the upcoming first NHL match in the Czech Republic this fall. In addition to that, we will organize a program about U.S.-Canadian hockey league in September.

On August 5, an evening at the American Center will focus on Hawaii. A multimedia program featuring photos and videos made by Czech TV crews will be shown, together with several interesting guests including a Czech-American living in Honolulu, a diplomat and a musician who traveled Hawaii.  You can also look forward to some Hawaiian music and refreshments.

And we will have one more election speaker for the end of July. Czech-American journalist Dusan Neumann who lives in Pennsylvania and writes from her for major Czech media, will speak about ordinary people election expectations. Dusan Neumann is in Prague for the summer and agreed to speak even for smaller group of people. He will show also some pictures from Pennsylvania primaries.

The American Center library remains open as usual during the summer - Monday to Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Groups can call for an appointment also in other times at + 420 257 532 566.
