2009 – New Beginning: From Lincoln to Obama is the title of the winter-spring season at the American Center.
During this period we will focus on the historical inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States as well as the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.
American inauguration tradition was the theme for our opening night on January 15, 2009.
Via DVC, Washington-based Czech Radio correspondent Vít Pohanka set the scene of the upcoming inauguration for the 50 attendees.
Then Ambassador Richard Graber and Cultural Attache David Gainer described their own personal experiences as inauguration participants, as well as discussed the transition from one administration to the next.
Czech historian Milan Hroníček then detailed the history of tradition and change in American inaugurations. Lectures were followed by a screening of the Biography Channel’s documentary on Barack Obama.
