Major Biotechnology Conference in Prague
September 24, 2007
The U.S. Embassy hosted a conference on biotechnology in September with funding from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs. The conference, co-sponsored by the Czech Ministry of Agricultulre, drew over 70 participants from five countries, including representatives from government, retail and food industry, academia, as well as English and Czech press.
U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic Richard Graber gave opening remarks explaining the importance of biotechnology in the United States and the opportunities biotechnology provides to address poverty and food security issues on a global scale. Among the seven panel speakers were Mr. Fred Yoder, a farmer from the United State (Ohio), and Professor Richard Phipps from the United Kingdom (University of Reading). Mr. Yoder appeared on the popular morning talk show "Dobre Rano" with Ms. Marie Cerovska from the Czech Ministry of Agriculture to talk about the benefits of biotechnology.
The U.S. Embassy is grateful for the enthusiastic participation of all the panelists and attendants at the conference. The United States and the Czech Republic continue to demonstrate how science-based approach to biotechnology can benefit a growing number of people in our countries and around the world. As the role of biotechnology in modern agriculture, food, and industry continues to grow, we look forward to continued future cooperation with the Czech Republic.
