Admiral Mark Fitzgerald Talks in Prague about the Importance of the Czech Role in NATO

July 17, 2009

Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, and Commander of the Allied Joint Force Command Naples, visited Prague on Wednesday July 15th. Admiral Fitzgerald has operational responsibility for NATO missions in the Balkans, Iraq and the Mediterranean, as well as being responsible for providing overall command, operational control, and coordination of U.S. Naval forces in the European and African Command area of responsibility.

In an interview for the U.S. Embassy, Admiral Fitzgerald talks about the importance of the Czech contribution to NATO, as well as NATO anti-piracy efforts off the African coast. “We started last fall off the coast of Somalia - we escort ships and try to stop the piracy. Now we work as a NATO group and there is also an EU force. Other countries joined our efforts – Russia, China and India, for example,” said the Admiral.
