Can blogs really be an alternative to established media? What role can blogs play in countries where free media doesn't exist? What has been the evolution of blogging in the Czech Republic? How are blogs deployed at Czech news servers? Under what circumstances should public figures blog? Are bloggers responsible for the accuracy and impact of their reports? Panel Discussion at the American Center: "Countering AIDS in the 21st Century - Czech and American Approaches"

Marking World AIDS Day on December 1, the American Center hosted a panel discussion that aimed to provide an insight into current Czech and American programs and policies in fighting the threat of AIDS. AIDS Centers in the Czech Republic provide HIV and AIDS treatment as well HIV tests and prevention programs. Dům světla, founded in 1999, is the leading source of Czech support and provides an information center for HIV-positive patients and their families and friends. Among other activities, Dům světla also provides information programs aimed against prejudice and discimination. Among the panelists were: Miroslav Hlavatý (Director, Dům světla), Jeffrey Holachek (Defense Attache, U.S. Embassy Prague) and Ladislav Machala (AIDS Center Praha).

"Democratic Transition and the American NGOs": Lecture by Freedom House Director of Advocacy Paula Schriefer

U.S. Embassy Prague’s American Center facilitated a visit to the Czech Republic by Paula Schriefer, Director of Advocacy at Freedom House, one of the most influential American non-governmental organizations. Freedom House conducts an array of advocacy, education, and training initiatives that promote human rights, democracy, the rule of law and independent media mainly in young democracies that are coping with the legacies of dictatorship and political repression. Ms. Schriefer gave a lecture titled "Democratic Transition and the American NGOs" to a full auditorium at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Masaryk University in Brno. In her speech, she focused on history and current issues Freedom House deals with as well as the broader concept of interaction among different NGOs, governments and international bodies such as the United Nations.

U.S. - EU Relations: Panel Discussion at the American Center

In connection with the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Rome Treaty, the American Center organized a panel discussion entitled "50 Years of European Integration: Views from the U.S. and Central Europe" which featured Roy Ginsberg, a foremost U.S. expert on EU as well as transatlantic affairs as well as David Král of Europeum and Roman Joch of Civic Institute.

North Korea Discussed at the American Center
February 27, 2007
On February 27, the American Center organized a panel discussion entitled "North Korea and Global Security" that featured Petr Suchý of Masaryk University, Antonín Rašek of Charles University and Antonín Berdych of the Association for International Affairs. Moderated by Martin Ehl of Hospodářské noviny, it dealt with issues such as the recent agreement in Beijing as well as North Korea's nuclear and ballistic tests.

Journalists in Danger: Panel Discussion at the American Center
January 23, 2007
This discussion aimed to compare different journalists´ approaches to reporting from war regions (or those where freedom of speech is restricted) and among the panelists were Sergei Danilochkin (Director of Radio Free Iraq), Michal Kubal (Chief Foreign Correspondent, Czech TV) and Jan Rybář (veteran journalist, MF Dnes).
The discussion is moderated by Michael Hahn, Public Affairs Counselor at U.S. Embassy Prague.
