“Young Mr. Lincoln” Film Screening

“Young Mr. Lincoln” is a 1939 fictionalized biography film about the early life of President Abraham Lincoln, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda.
“Young Mr. Lincoln” explores the life of Abraham Lincoln before he became President. In the film, Lincoln moves from Kentucky to Springfield, Illinois, to begin his law practice, where he defends two men accused of murder in a political brawl, courts his future wife Mary Todd, and agrees to go into politics. In 2003, “Young Mr. Lincoln” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

This program (1996) tells the life story of Abraham Lincoln, from the rustic childhood that forged his beliefs to the tough campaign that made him president. Historians examine the difficult leadership choices of his turbulent first term and the Civil War, as well as his bouts with depression and his troubled marriage to Mary Todd.
