Patchwork club members from all over the Czech Republic, led by Jana Jandejskouva from Bellus-Gallery, came to the American Center in Prague to see the premiere of the document “A Century of Quilts, America in Cloth.” In a 70 minute presentation participants had a chance to see some of the 100 best American quilts of the last century. They also saw some of the best American quilt makers and heard their stories.

Czech women from different Bohemian towns like Kadan, Chomutov, Litvinov, Rumburk and others brought their best hand made quilts for display. Guests of the American center observed that the patchwork history is connected to the woman of the first American settlers.  They found use for older cloth by sewing it together in geometric shapes to create different designs.

Patchwork lector Jana Lálová from Bellus-Gallery spoke about the fact that the roots of today’s patchwork is in the US and that practically all quilt makers today get their inspiration from American patchwork. The next screening of this documentary will be in Brno in the second half of this year. More information is available at the Bellus Gallery webpage.
