American Center Hosts "Deliberating in a Democracy" Workshop on Ethnic Minorities in a Society
December 27, 2007
At a December 14 workshop of the educational program “Deliberating in a Democracy” held at the American Center, 25 Czech secondary school teachers discussed the position and role of ethnic minorities in a society. The workshop was part of the international Deliberating in a Democracy (DID) project http://www.deliberating.org/
The DID program has been a part of the U.S. Embassy involvement on educational reform and support of democracy development. The emphasis is on a direct person-to-person exchange of ideas and experiences that gives people a much clearer picture of democracy in action.
The DID project was designed for secondary teachers and their students from partner countries and organizations (Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Tajikistan, and USA (Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.) The program’s goal is to improve teaching and learning of democratic principles and the skills of civic deliberation with a focus on several key components: Deliberating on the Web, Staff Development Sessions, Classroom Civic Deliberations, Exchanges between the U.S. and Partner Countries, and Student Civic Deliberation Conferences.
