U.S. Embassy Partners with CIVITAS to Support Workshop  on „Foundations of Democracy and Justice”

December 12, 2007

The American Center hosted a December 11 workshop of the educational program „Foundations of Democracy and Justice”, which is a civic education program designed to teach pupils how to become responsible citizens. The project was developed by educators at the Center for Civic Education in Calabasas, California.

Ivana Havlinova, Executive Director of the civic association CIVITAS, gave a lecture for participants from Prague, Central Bohemian Region, Czech-Moravian Highlands Region and West Bohemian Region.

The workshop, supported by U.S. Embassy Prague, was focused on the core democratic principles and values, and the program was divided into four parts - Authority, Privacy, Justice and Responsibility.

Key principles of Foundations of Democracy were translated into Czech and accredited by the Ministry of Education with the aim of incorporating the program into the Educational Framework – the Czech educational reform.  The sequence and the content of individual program parts are adjusted to the needs of building democracy in the Czech Republic.
