November 20, 2007
U.S. Ambassador Richard Graber celebrated an official opening of a new school building at the F.D. Roosevelt High School for Handicapped Students on Friday, November 16, in Brno. The F.D. Roosevelt High School provides education in areas of general and special education. Curricula focus on an individualized approach to care and various methods are used to facilitate subjects to handicapped students. The school centers on teaching skills that will enable the students to lead autonomous and productive lives.
During the tour through the school, the Ambassador watched a gala program performed by students and friends of the school, including a song and dance performance by a children’s folk group called Javorníček.
Ambassador Graber noted: "It was with pleasure that I welcomed the decision of this school to use the name “F.D. Roosevelt High School for Handicapped Students.” I share a conviction that President Roosevelt can become a model for these school’s students. Despite his handicap, he succeeded in reaching the highest political office in the United States. His wisdom and determination helped the United States to overcome deep economic crisis and achieve victory in World War II. "
In Brno Ambassador met representatives of the Environmental Law Service (EPS), a non-governmental, non-profit, and non-political public interest law organization that brings together lawyers and law students. The meeting was focused on their new project: The GARDE Program (Global Alliance for Responsibility, Democracy and Equity) and the responsible behavior of multinational corporations.
