National Poll Shows 84% of Americans Support Missile Defense

PRNewswire-USNewswire - A national poll released today shows 84% of Americans support the development of a missile defense system to protect the United States. The poll also revealed that 70% of Americans support the deployment of missile defense systems in Poland and the Czech Republic to protect the United States and U.S. allies from threats originating in the Middle East.

The national opinion poll was conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation. The poll, with a 3.2% margin of error, includes weighted results from 1,000 people from all over the nation, representing Democrats, Republicans, and Independents.

Further polling data showed that 82% of the national public felt strongly that a U.S. missile system should protect American troops and allies from the threat of ballistic missiles. 71% also supported the full funding of missile defense by Congress. When asked whether candidates for President should talk about their plans to defend the United States, including the development of missile defense, 81% of respondents answered that it was an important topic for candidates to address.

One interesting revelation also found in the poll was that 75% of the respondents favored research to determine whether missile defense systems in space would be feasible.

"The results of the poll clearly show a mandate by the American public to our Congress and President to move forward on the deployment and development of Missile Defense," commented Riki Ellison, President and founder of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (MDAA).
