Lecture: John A. Sutter, the founder of modern California

The U.S. Embassy in Prague would like to invite you to a lecture by Jiří Černík "John A. Sutter, the founder of modern California, defendant of immigrants and victim of the gold rush," that will take place in commemoration of the 160th anniversary of California joining the United States. The lecture will give basic information about the rise and fall of this Swiss immigrant, his contribution to the founding of modern California and subsequent efforts to receive adequate compensation from the U.S. government. Jiří Černík has been living in the U.S. since 1967. He works as Director of six Slavic language departments at a language school run by the Department of State. He is author of many books and is currently working on an overview of major battles between Native Americans and white colonists in North America.
The lecture will take place in the Prague Woodrow Wilson Center (Tržiště 13, Praha 1) on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 5 p.m.
