Secretary of State Rice Meets Czech Foreign Minister Svoboda

Secretary Rice met with Czech Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda in Washington on May 16 for their first bilateral meeting.

They discussed the ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic governments in both countries and our collaboration in the war on terror as well as visa related issues. Secretary Rice also welcomed the meeting as an opportunity to express our appreciation for the Czech government’s active engagement on behalf of democracy and human rights in places like Belarus and Cuba.

Foreign Minister Svoboda presented a donation of just over $1.2 million to the Broadcasting Board of Governors to help pay for a new headquarters for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Prague. For more information about the donation, please read the RFE/RL press release.
